How the use of lubricants affects sexual intercourse

The use of lubricants during sexual intercourse can significantly affect the quality of the relationship itself so that it significantly improves the experience with the partner, reduces discomfort, and increases satisfaction. Lubricants play a role in reducing friction during intercourse, facilitating penetration, and can contribute to greater pleasure. Its use affects the prevention of pain and irritation, especially in people who suffer from vaginal dryness, use condoms or practice anal sex. However, it's important to understand the various aspects of using a lubricant, including the benefits, potential risks, ingredients, and proper application.

Types of lubricants and their use

Before listing the benefits of using lubricants, it's very important to know what types exist and how to use them correctly.

There are three main types of lubricants, which differ in their basic composition, so we have lubricants based on water, silicone, and oil. Each of these types has its own specific characteristics and is best used in certain situations.

Water-based lubricants are most commonly used because of their compatibility with condoms and sex toys. They are easily washed off and don't cause irritation in most people, but they dry faster, so it's necessary to apply them more often. Silicone lubricants are longer lasting and more water resistant, making them a good choice for longer sex or use in water. However, they aren't compatible with silicone sex toys, as they can damage their material, so it's recommended to be cautious when combining them.

Oil-based lubricants aren't compatible with latex condoms, as they can weaken the material and increase the risk of them breaking, so it isn't recommended to use them together. Also, they can cause irritation or infection in people with sensitive skin or are prone to infection.

Advantages of using lubricants

One of the main advantages of lubricants is the reduction of friction during sexual intercourse, which can prevent discomfort or pain, thus increasing pleasure during intercourse. Vaginal dryness is common in women and can be caused by a variety of factors, including hormonal changes, changes during menopause, breastfeeding, use of certain medications, or stress. In this situation, the use of lubricants can improve the sexual experience and increase the chance of achieving satisfaction. According to research, women who use lubricants during intercourse often report greater levels of sexual satisfaction and easier orgasms.

Also, the use of lubricants is almost necessary during anal intercourse. Since the anal canal has no natural ability to lubricate, using an adequate lubricant reduces the risk of injury and increases comfort during anal penetration. The use of water or silicone-based lubricants is recommended, as they are easy to apply and do not cause irritation.

Potential risks and side effects

Although lubricants are generally safe, it's important to be aware of the potential risks. Some products may contain ingredients that may cause irritation or allergic reactions. Lubricants containing glycerin may increase the risk of vaginal infections in people who are prone to infections. Also, artificial fragrances, parabens, and preservatives present in some lubricants can cause irritation in people with sensitive skin.

One of the studies showed that some lubricants can change the pH value of the vagina, which can increase the risk of infections. That is why it is important to choose lubricants that have a balanced pH value and do not contain ingredients that cause irritation.

Using lubricants during anal sex can increase the risk of HIV transmission, especially if other rectal infections are present. Research has shown that users of lubricants are three times more likely to develop rectal sexually transmitted infections, regardless of gender, HIV status, or condom use.

Natural alternatives and tips for safe use

To ensure an optimal experience, it is recommended to choose lubricants that are dermatologically tested and don't contain harmful chemicals. For people who prefer natural products or are sensitive to ingredients found in commercial lubricants, there are natural alternatives like aloe vera. It is also important that before the first use, we test a small amount of lubricant on the skin in order to check for a possible allergic reaction. Lubricants can also be used during masturbation, which increases pleasure and reduces the risk of irritation due to friction. If used with condoms, it is important to choose a lubricant that is compatible with the condom material to avoid damage.

Lubricants can significantly improve the sexual experience, but it's important to choose the right one carefully, be aware of potential risks, and follow guidelines for safe use to ensure optimal sexual health and satisfaction. If there is any irritation, redness, itching, or burning sensation, stop using it and consult with a doctor in time.
