Allergic conjunctivitis

Description

Allergic conjunctivitis is a condition in which the eyes react to an allergen, resulting in inflammation of the conjunctiva, the tissue that lines the inner surface of the eyelid, as a consequence of an allergic reaction. The most common allergens are pollen, dust, dust mites, animal dander. The conjunctiva becomes red, swollen, the eye itches, and tears.

Symptoms

Red eyes, expanded blood vessels on the sclera, intense itching, tingling, swollen eyelids, teary eyes discharging colorless liquid. Symptoms may be seasonal.

History of disease is being taken and medical examination is being done.Generally, tests are not necessary for setting up diagnosis. Specific allergens are defined by testing on allergies.

Therapy

The best treatment is to avoid exposing to cause or allergens. Antihistamines with or without decongestant help alleviate itching and swallowing. More severe cases that do not react on antihistamines could require a prescription drug.
