Anemia

Description

Anemia si a condition that occurs due to decreased level of red blood cells. Red blood cells are main transmitters of the oxygen to the organs. There are three main reasons for anemia: loss of blood, loss of blood cells in the body, abnormal production of red blood cells. Disorders that lead to anemia include iron deficiency, vitamin B12 deficiency, folic acid deficiency, sickle-cell anemia, cancer, aplastic anemia and myelodysplastic anemia.

Symptoms

Weakness, tiredness, pale skin, shortness of breath, fainting.

Overview

Anamnesis is being taken and physical examination is being done, as well as additional blood analysis. Biopsy of bone marrow could also be done in order to determine the cause.

Tests

Complete blood count (CBC).

Additional analyses

Analysis of iron , vitamin B12 and other blood analysis , bone marrow biopsy .

Therapy

The objective of the therapy is to prevent the cause of bleeding or deficiency and to increase the number of red blood cells. Therapy can include: iron, vitamin B12, folic acid and/or infusion.
