Ankle sprain appears when the ligaments around the ankle are excessively stretched, causing tearing of small blood vessels, during which it does not come to a bone rupture. The most frequent move of the sprain is towards inner part or injury towards outside part of the ankle (lateral ankle sprain). Treatment includes: having a rest, ice, compressions and elevation of legs. A rest of 1-2 days is necessary, every 4 hours ice should be put on every 20 minutes, bandaging and ankle should be elevated above the level of the heart. More severe cases of injuries require special rehabilitation or even surgical intervention. Painkillers could also be used.
