Anxiety disorder

Description

Anxiety disorder or generalized anxiety disorder, GAD. Anxiety is the sense of narrowness, and anxiety disorder is psychological disorder in which anxiety is that much serious that it prevents the person in performing normal daily activities. Anxiety is followed by following signs: muscle tension, restlessness, palpitations, rapid breathing, trembling, suspicion, confusion, decrease of concentration or fear of losing control. This reaction can be a consequence of real of presumed danger or stress. Also, it can happen without any particular reason. The episode can be short or long-term. Symptoms may disappear and come back repeatedly. The exact cause of this disorder is not known, but it is considered that it is a combination of genetic and environmental factors.

Symptoms

Fear, misgiving, muscle tension, restlessness, palpitations, rapid heartbeat, anxiety, increase increased alertness, confusion, decreased concentration, fear of losing control.

Overview

History of disease is being taken and physical examination is being done to set the diagnosis and help in discovering the triggers and potential background causes.

Additional analyses

Pregnancy test, complete blood count (CBC), biochemical blood analysis, CT scan and urinalysis, blood alcohol test, drug test are being done if necessary.

Therapy

Therapy depends on the severity of the symptoms. Treatment may include benzodiazepines (diazepam, lorazepam), antidepressants, psychological counseling and/or psychological treatment as cognitive-behavioral therapy.
